They Call for Law to Ensure Uninterrupted Internet
In a move to boost Bangladesh's Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector, leaders of the Bangladesh Association of Contact Center and Outsourcing (BACCO) met with Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP Standing Committee member and former Commerce Minister. The meeting took place on November 5 at Hotel Sarina in Dhaka, led by BACCO President Tanveer Ibrahim and General Secretary Faisal Alim. Other senior BACCO executives, including Vice President Md. Abul Khayer and Treasurer Md. Aminul Haque, were also present.
During the meeting, Amir Khosru emphasized the need for uninterrupted internet services to restore the country’s international image, which has previously suffered due to internet outages. He urged lawmakers to pass legislation to ensure consistent connectivity, essential for sustaining a robust economy.
Highlighting the BPO sector’s contribution to Bangladesh’s economy as a significant source of foreign revenue, second only to the garment industry, he noted, “The outsourcing sector has been a beacon of hope for young entrepreneurs and investors. To foster growth, we need to invest in research, build modern technology parks, and encourage innovation in new technologies.”
BACCO President Tanveer Ibrahim added that the outsourcing industry currently generates $800 million annually in revenue and employs over 80,000 individuals, with women making up 40% of the workforce. He urged the government to extend tax exemptions, enhance export incentives, and establish specialized economic zones within Dhaka to support the industry’s growth.
Faisal Alim, BACCO’s General Secretary, discussed BACCO’s efforts to support emerging freelancers and entrepreneurs in the IT sector. He highlighted the organization’s plans to introduce affiliate memberships for freelancers and to offer skills training, enabling them to transition from freelancing to entrepreneurship. "Through skill development, we aim to create employment opportunities for youth, which will play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s economic advancement,” he remarked.
